Henning studied pharmacy at the Julius-Maximilians-University (JMU) Wuerzburg and became a licensed pharmacist in Germany in 2000.
In 2004, he received his PhD at the Department of Pharmaceutics & Biopharmacy, Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuernberg. After a post-doctoral research period at the School of Pharmacy, University of Connecticut (Prof. Michael J. Pikal) until early 2006, he returned to the FAU Erlangen-Nuernberg and formed the “Freeze Drying Focus Group” (FDFG) within the Division of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmacy.
In 2010, Henning obtained his habilitation and venia legendi in pharmaceutical sciences and biopharmacy with the thesis “Quality by Design (QbD) in Freeze-Drying Using Advanced Process Analytical Technology (PAT)”. In the same year, he co-founded GILYOS in Wuerzburg with his wife Margit.
Since 2000, Henning is working in the field of freeze drying and related disciplines, first in an academic and later also in a commercial environment. He currently holds the position as a CSO at Gilyos.
In addition, he is professor at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg (pharmaceutics & biopharmacy) and lecturer at JMU Wuerzburg (pharmaceutics and food technology). He has graduated more than 10 full-time PhD students over the past years, and still hosts the FDFG at FAU Erlangen-Nuernberg.
More recently, he was appointed as a mentor for life science start-ups in Wuerzburg to grow next generation scientists.
