The purpose of this section is to provide you with a more in-depth scientific background on various freeze drying related topics to help you understanding the integral interrelationship between product and process.
Literature in the field of freeze drying / lyophilization is quite extensive and in some cases, very specific. Moreover, such literature is commonly not found at a single source, a dedicated Journal. For this reason, we recommend the following three (very comprehensive) and classic articles for those new to the subject:
Michael J. Pikal. Freeze Drying.
In Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Third Edition, Volume 3. Taylor and Francis: New York, 2007: 1807-1833.
Edward H. Trappler. Freeze Drying, Scale up Considerations.
In Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Third Edition, Volume 3. Taylor and Francis: New York, 2007: 1834-1849.
Henning Gieseler. Quality by Design (QbD) in Freeze Drying.
In Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Fourth Edition, Volume 4. Taylor and Francis: New York, 2013: 2903-2917.
For our work, it is important to have a heads up what is currently the trend in freeze drying, but also to have a fundament of literature which was published in the past. It is not surprising that today some work is claimed as "brand new", although the idea and the approach itself was technically realized decades back.
Gilyos has actively published a number of research articles over the past 15 years. In addition, Gilyos has been involved in many academic research projects.
